Coal truck
This is the coal truck Barney and other coal miners are being taken back to Phoenix in. They would be sat in the back, maybe cross-legged as it's designed more for transporting coal rather than people. Some miners would possibly sit with rags to keep them warm on the colder days whereas on warmer days some would sit with their shirts open or not on at all for the long journey home from the coal mine in the North of Arizona.
Carnell 'Ivory' Taylor Jr.
I've given Ivory a real name as well, I felt like he deserved one.
But no one else has learned his real name, because no one cares enough, to them he's just the black piano player, which is where he earned the name Ivory. No one knows his real age, not even he does anymore, Barney is the only thing he's got in this world close to a friend.

Barney Daniels' monologue
Context for Barney’s monologue
Barney’s monologue is the first voice you’ll hear when
playing Spotlight. It’s an introduction into the story giving the player a bit
of backstory and context. The scene is Barney travelling back from his place of
work, the coal mine in the north of Arizona where he takes trips to and works
from a few days up to a week at a time. We learn that he has high hopes for his
daughter, he’s devoted to helping her but he’s come across hard times after being
made redundant as a coal miner. However the positive way in which he’s speaking
implies he has other sources of money.
Barney Daniels monologue draft #1 - 104 words
Last year my wife Betty passed away, leaving our only
daughter and I alone living in phoenix. This last year has been hard on our
Coleen, on me too. The coal mine is in decline due to the rise in oil use,
fancy automobiles and such. The future doesn’t look so good for it, that’s
probably why they’ve laid me off. “You’re too old” they said, “you’re a danger
to others”, well I’ve got plenty of life in me yet and I’ll devote every
breathing minute of it to help my Coleen – OUR Coleen. It’s what Betty would’ve
wanted and it’s what Coleen deserves.
Barney Daniels monologue draft #2 – 158 words
Last year Betty died, my wife, a lifetime gone in only a few
moments. Now it’s just me and our daughter Coleen. It’s been a hard year for me
and Coleen. The coal mine is going bust ‘cos of everything running on oil these
days, fancy automobiles and such. The future don’t look so good for the ol’
coal mine, that’d be why they’ve laid me off. “You’re too old” they said,
“You’re a danger to others”, well I’ve got plenty of life in me yet and I’ll be
puttin’ all I got into helping my Coleen – OUR sweet lil’ Coleen. She wants to
be a singer and I’ll bet her chances are good as long as I help her get there.
I wish Betty could still be here to see it happen, ‘cos I know it will. I’m
gonna put all I can into getting her there, it’s what Betty would’ve wanted and
it’s what Coleen deserves.
Coleen's dress
Here you can see the front, side and back views of Coleen's dress. It's got thin fabric for pleats, which falls from below the hips, so you can't see a defined feminine shape.
