Cultural context

Prohibition was one of the main features of the 1920's causing illegal speakeasies to open throughout America to supply angry deprived civilians with their highly demanded alcohol. This was a very dangerous business as during this time the sale, production and transportation of alcohol could cause you to be arrested and prosecuted. Due to this, there was a large increase in gangs who could make huge profit from the bootlegging of alcohol. Girls rebelled against the conventional view of women and so the "flapper" girl was born; A new breed of women who stood out from the crowd and dressed how they wanted. The movie business was also on the increase inspiring people to stand up and follow their dreams instead of fading into the background. There was also a large degree of racism throughout the 1920s, the Klu Klux Klan began to be accepted and therefore grew in the U.S. WWI caused a lost generation in the 1920s, the veterans struggled to fit back into society due to the emotional aftermath of what they had been through.
